What is the difference between a Paint and a Pinto
By Jodie Strait
The American Paint Horse Association (Paint) and the Pinto Horse Association (Pinto) are both registries that include horses with tobiano and overo markings. Many people think the two registries are interchangeable but there are some differences between the two. Bloodlines Paint horses (APHA) are required to be descended from the original American Paint Stock Horse Association or American Paint Quarter Horse Association (the two clubs that merged to become the American Paint Horse Association) or horses that are registered in either the Jockey Club (Thoroughbred) or American Quarter Horse Association (Quarter Horse) . Pinto horses (PtHA) are descended from any breed except Appaloosa and Drafts. Color Requirements Paints require 2 inches of qualifying white to be considered for Regular Registry. If a horse has with one parent registered as a Paint that meets bloodline requirements but does not have the qualifying white they will be registered as Solid Paint Bred. Pinto requires a minimum of 4 inches of qualifying white with underlying pink skin for all horses, ponies are required to have at least 3 inches and miniature horses are required to have 2 inches. Any resulting foals on a Pinto that meets bloodline requirements but does not have the qualifying white they will be registered as Solid Paint Bred. Conclusions Are all Paints able to be registered as Pintos? YES. But in order to be considered for regular registry they must meet the four inch white requirement or will be included as solids. Are all Pintos able to be registered as Paints? NO. Only those who meet the APHA bloodline requirements can be considered for registry. In order to be considered for regular registry they must meet the four inch white requirement or will be included as solids. |
